Ice Breakers

High Tower Challenge

A classic engineering and strategy exercise where teams race to construct the tallest, free-standing structure using limited, unconventional materials within a strict timeframe.
Activity Overview

A build-and-test innovation challenge.

The High Tower Challenge is a hands-on, high-energy problem-solving exercise. Teams are provided with a fixed set of simple construction materials—such as newspaper sheets, drinking straws, wooden sticks, or spaghetti, along with a limited roll of tape—and are tasked with building the tallest possible free-standing tower.

To elevate the strategic challenge, the tower must not only stand unassisted for a designated measurement period (e.g., 30 seconds), but it may also be required to support a load at its apex (such as a golf ball, small beanbag, or marshmallow). The activity forces teams to navigate rapid prototyping, structural planning, resource rationing, and time management while balancing height against stability.

Why Organizations Love This Activity

Rapid Prototyping Sandbox

Immediately demonstrates the risks of over-planning without testing; teams that build and test early outperform those that spend all their time debating theoretical designs.

Resource Optimization

With strict material limits, groups must treat every piece of tape or straw as a high-value asset, encouraging lean thinking and waste reduction.

Risk vs. Reward Balancing

Pushes teams to manage trade-offs—building higher increases winning potential but exponentially elevates the risk of total structural collapse.

Role Alignment & Division of Labor

Natural roles emerge quickly, from structural designers and material preparers to stability testers and timekeepers.

High-Visiblity Spectator Value

The physical, visual nature of towering structures creates immense room excitement, spontaneous cheers, and high creative rivalry across teams.

Universal Application

Requires no specialized skills, equalizing hierarchy and allowing every participant to contribute ideas and hands-on effort.

Learning Objectives

Learning that connects directly to work.

Each round is facilitated with observation, reflection and practical transfer to daily team behaviour.

Intentional Setup: Agile Iteration over Perfectionism

Teaches teams to build minimum viable products (MVPs) quickly to test structural assumptions early rather than waiting until the final minute.

Role Variety: Distributed Execution

Encourages members to split into specialized sub-units (e.g., base foundation crew vs. vertical extension team) to maximize output within tight deadlines.

Productive Stretch: Managing Innovation Anxiety

Helps groups navigate the tension of impending deadlines while handling fragile, unstable structures under public view.

Momentum Repair: Pivoting After Collapse

Teaches resilience; when a tower sways or falls mid-build, the team must instantly diagnose the failure point and rebuild without panic or blame.

Relevance Check: Structural Integrity in Projects

Serves as a direct metaphor for business projects, showing that a weak foundational strategy cannot support ambitious, high-reaching goals.

Specific Commitment: Continuous Testing

Translates into a workplace commitment to incorporate early feedback loops and frequent testing into project milestones.

Success Story

How a tower building challenge reshaped a product development team's launch cycle

During an innovation offsite for a consumer tech company, cross-functional teams were experiencing delayed product rollouts because design teams held onto prototypes until they were "perfect" rather than seeking early testing feedback.

The facilitator launched the High Tower Challenge, supplying each team with 20 sheets of newspaper and 1 meter of tape, with the rule that the tower had to support a tennis ball for 1 minute. The highest-performing group didn't draw a blueprint; instead, they immediately built three small base prototypes in the first 5 minutes to test load capacities before committing their remaining tape to the winning design. Conversely, the group that spent 15 minutes planning their tower saw it collapse 10 seconds before the final whistle.

During the debrief, participants directly connected the winning team's success to adopting an "early testing mindset" in their upcoming product development pipeline.

Business Impact

  • Shift from prolonged theoretical planning to early, iterative prototyping
  • Reduction in project bottleneck risks through earlier stage-gate testing
  • Stronger collaboration between conceptual designers and execution leads
  • Adoption of "fail fast, learn faster" principles across project teams
Key Insight: You can't secure a high-reaching goal on a shaky foundation—and you'll never know if your foundation is solid until you test it under load.
